According to Kenya’s Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, Ojwang was found unconscious in a cell at Nairobi's Central Police Station on 07 June. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Ojwang had been arrested from their home in Homa Bay County, approximately 358 km away, for allegedly publishing false information criticizing a senior officer, and was transported to Nairobi.
