Sound telecommunication regulations and policies empower consumers to thrive in the modern connected life

For six consecutive years, MTN has once again been named South Africa’s best mobile network in the 2024 Mobile Network Quality Report by MyBroadband Insights. This recognition is more than just a win for MTN; it’s a victory for South African consumers, the government, and the telecommunications sector at large. With this achievement, MTN continues to set the benchmark for mobile network excellence, and South Africa should be proud to have a provider that competes at the highest international standards, ensuring a reliable, fast, and world-class service for its people.

The MyBroadband Insights report, based on over 1.17 million speed tests from 18,649 mobile data users across South Africa, shows that MTN leads the pack with the highest average download speed of 80.88 Mbps, significantly ahead of its competitors. MTN’s dominance in all areas of mobile network performance – including speed, reliability, and latency – is a testament to its ongoing investments in infrastructure and innovation. It is through this commitment that MTN has been able to continually deliver a network that not only meets but exceeds customer expectations.

However, this achievement goes beyond just MTN’s own success; it’s a significant reflection of how the South African telecommunications sector, guided by effective regulation and strong policy frameworks, has evolved to become more competitive both locally and globally. South African consumers, the government, and the telecom sector can all take pride in having a provider that continues to challenge itself to maintain the highest quality network.

This continued excellence would not be possible without the supportive role played by the South African government and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA). The sound regulatory frameworks and forward-thinking initiatives, such as the successful spectrum auction, have paved the way for enhanced competition and network growth in the sector. The spectrum auction, in particular, has unlocked critical frequencies, allowing mobile providers to improve coverage, data speeds, and network performance across the country.

ICASA’s commitment to creating a level playing field in South Africa’s telecom industry has enabled providers like MTN to push the envelope in delivering a service that is not just about profit but about improving the lives of South Africans. As a result of these regulations, mobile connectivity has become an enabler for broader economic and social development.

This recognition is not only about speed and performance but also about its tangible impact on the South African economy and society. We have invested billions of rands in infrastructure upgrades, ensuring that its network can support the growing demands of consumers, businesses, and communities nationwide. This commitment to network resilience and expansion has resulted in the rollout of new Radio Access Network upgrades in the past year alone. These upgrades are not only about improving mobile performance but also ensuring that our customers enjoy a seamless, reliable, and fast service wherever they are.

But our impact goes beyond just network upgrades. The company is dedicated to advancing the lives of ordinary South Africans through its various corporate social responsibility initiatives. One of MTN’s key focus areas is the digitisation of education. In a country where access to quality education remains a challenge, MTN is leading the way by providing digital tools and platforms to bridge the gap.

We have played a pivotal role in digitising education in South Africa, with over 400 multimedia centres established across the country for the past years. These centres, which cater to a mix of conventional schools, LSEN schools, colleges, and community centres, provide access to technology and internet connectivity that is vital for students’ learning. Through partnerships with the South African government, we continue to ensure that students in underserved areas can access the same quality of education as those in more developed regions.

Moreover, our dedication to improving digital literacy goes beyond the classroom. Through initiatives such as the MTN Online School and the Siyavula platform, the company provides thousands of learners and educators with access to digital learning resources.

Our continued success in the mobile network industry highlights the company’s unwavering commitment to the development of South Africa and its people. Beyond just offering mobile connectivity, we are playing a key role in advancing the country’s digital transformation.

As we continue to invest in the future of the country, both through network infrastructure and social development initiatives, South African consumers can be proud to be connected to a network that not only leads in performance but also contributes meaningfully to the nation’s progress.

The recognition as South Africa’s best network is a reflection of the company’s relentless pursuit of excellence, the effective regulation and policies within the telecommunication sector, and the ongoing collaboration with the South African government. As we remain committed to advancing lives and connecting people to the future, its customers can rest assured that they are not only receiving the best mobile service but also contributing to a nation on the rise.
