Trump rewards Elon Musk with leading role in government efficiency department

US President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday named Elon Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a newly created Department of Government Efficiency, rewarding two of Trump's well known supporters from the private sector.

  • Musk and Ramaswamy will lead efficiency department
  • DOGE intended to dismantle bureaucracy, cut regulations, restructure agencies
  • Musk and Ramaswamy's work to conclude by July 4, 2026
  • Will take 'advice and guidance' from outside government, work with OMB

Musk and Ramaswamy "will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies," Trump said in a statement.

Trump said the new department "will provide advice and guidance from outside of government," signaling the entity would operate outside the confines of government.

However, it would work with the White House and Office of Management & Budget to "drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach" to government never seen before.

Trump said their work would conclude by July 4, 2026, making it a "gift" to the country on the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Musk, ranked by Forbes as the richest person in the world, already stood to benefit from Trump's victory, with the billionaire entrepreneur expected to wield extraordinary influence to help his companies and secure favorable government treatment.

Musk gave millions of dollars to support Trump's presidential campaign and made public appearances with him. Trump had said he would offer Musk a role in his administration promoting government efficiency.

He has many links to Washington and his lineup of companies includes electric car company Tesla TSLA.O, social media platform X and rocket company SpaceX.

"This will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in government waste, which is a lot of people!" Musk said, according to Trump's statement, which called the new government initiative "potentially 'The Manhattan Project' of our time," referring to the U.S. plan to build the atomic bomb that helped end World War Two.

Ramaswamy is the founder of a pharmaceutical company who ran for the Republican presidential nomination against Trump and then threw his support behind the former president after dropping out.

"We will not go gently, @elonmusk," Ramaswamy said on X.

Musk reposted the announcement from Trump on his X account and added comments such as that, "The merch will be (fire)," using three fire emojis, and, "People have no idea how much this will move the needle!"

He also posted: "Threat to democracy? Nope, threat to BUREAUCRACY!!!"

The acronym of the new department - DOGE - coincides with the name of the cryptocurrency dogecoin that Musk promotes.

Right, because Musk has such a stellar record as a manager, starting with being fired from PayPal. He's managed to make a lot of his "Being in the right place at the right time, one time" but he's certainly not learned anything from it.

Penny Van Asche 13 November 2024 06:35 AM

We talking about Elon Musk here? You know, the one who cleaned the Twitter swamp (I think he cut the payroll by 40%. Or was it 60%?). Right place right time looks like 15 hour days on his research floor. I think he's learned a thing or 2.

jsiebrits 14 November 2024 03:11 PM

And how many users and advertisers have abandoned Twitter? And what is the value of Twitter now as compared to what he paid for it? You really think he has shown business savvy there?

lloydlister 13 November 2024 06:43 AM

Not learned anything? But still somehow became one of the richest people in the world.

Alex Stamp 13 November 2024 07:09 AM

Definitely a good choice -- he has obviousy become an adept executive and is no doubt a stickler for productivity. With his work ethic, reputation for ruthessness and reach he will have the right impact on bureaucracy... Could have used him here methinks.

v***w@g***.com 13 November 2024 07:25 AM

you sound slightly bitter, Musk did not become the richest person in the world by just "right time right place". Im glad finally someone is trying to sort out a government by treating it properly and removing all the garbage along the way.

Jennifer D 13 November 2024 07:31 AM

So you feel he became the richest man in the world because he was in the right place at the right time? Sounds like a bit of the old green envy rising? Musk is both brilliant, willing to take risks and competent. Whilst I’m not a Trump supporter, gov restructure and less bureaucracy - great idea.

jsiebrits 14 November 2024 03:15 PM

Musk's behaviour is become more erratic, don't you think?

Malcolm McManus 13 November 2024 09:30 AM

Another lefty losing it. Get over yourself. There is a lot of action already and good choices being made. The election was only a few days ago. The sooner they impeach Biden the better.

jsiebrits 14 November 2024 03:14 PM

Impeach Biden for what reason?

Malcolm McManus 13 November 2024 11:38 AM

Another lefty losing it. Get over yourself. There is a lot of action already and good choices being made. The election was only a few days ago. Biden must go before his term ends. Better for America..

In business, if you haven't made mistakes, even gotten fired, lost a lot of money, you haven't learned anything.

D'Esprit 13 November 2024 07:54 AM

They need two people to head it up? That's pretty inefficient!

chrisvan 13 November 2024 08:27 AM

Haha yes it is ah hilarious irony of note. One of them will have to fire the other.

chrisvan 13 November 2024 08:37 AM

Whatever one's persuasions, left, middle, or right, the world is in for one hell of a ride as two of the most monumental men in history, joined at the hip, set about their business of reshaping the United States of America, and, perhaps, the world. Fingers crossed.

godfrey.parkin 13 November 2024 09:35 AM

Nothing says government efficiency quite like an additional government department run by two men instead of one. The Department of Government Efficiency name is another Monty Python moment from the Trump circus. And letting Dark MAGA use it to push his DOGEcoin and his DOGE merch is delightful.

Richard Kennard 13 November 2024 10:08 AM

Musk is quite the multi tasker...think you can add the Ministry of silly walks to his portfolio

Richard Kennard 13 November 2024 10:15 AM

Come to think of it the idea must home come from the UK with the Tories bringing in their highly successful Minister of State for Brexit Opportunities and Government Efficiency.

Middle aged Mike 13 November 2024 09:42 AM

Listening to all the reasons why government should be bigger, less efficient and how Musk knows nothing about how one actually goes about doing more with less will be most entertaining.

Penny Philip 13 November 2024 09:43 AM

Bought & paid for. Now can he please stop telling everyone he's from South Africa. It's embarrassing.

Gerrie 13 November 2024 11:11 AM

I hope he does stop saying he is from South Africa. It makes me proud that a fellow South African can reach this high. Proud of you, Ellon.

Chris Orr 13 November 2024 11:20 AM

What's embarrassing about it???

Richard Kennard 13 November 2024 12:11 PM

The clue is in the first 4 words..Bought & paid for. Assume it refers to Don Old?

Malcolm McManus 13 November 2024 11:59 AM

I don't think he does. Hes too embarrassed.

Knowledgeispower RSA 13 November 2024 01:54 PM

As Trump said...his revenge will be success. Watch this space! The greatest presidency and American Era is about to start...already the Trump Effect is being seen. Elon and Vivek are massive brains, phenomenal businessmen, and good people. You blinketed armchair critics embarrass yourselves

jsiebrits 14 November 2024 03:39 PM

Good people? You know Trump is into molesting women? And Musk doesn't want to pay child support?

Louis Fourie 13 November 2024 02:53 PM

Unelected and unaccountable.

superjase 13 November 2024 04:18 PM

cadre deployment coming to the US! trump had endless hassles with non-partisan career civil servants last time around. he wants to avoid that this time, so is looking for any reason he can use to remove pesky departments/employees. he can then replace them as needed. cadre deployment 101.

chrisvan 15 November 2024 08:54 AM

A cadre is so that you can benefit yourself. As far as the USA voters are concerned, Trump is a patriot who wants to do what is best for America. So, you are right in that it is cadre deployment, but in this instance it is a cadre of patriots.

Philemon Solomon 13 November 2024 05:22 PM

Pretend we know nothing about the US election. The fact that the MSM (DM included) can lean so heavily to one side, and then the election result to go quite convincingly the other way, means that you have to smell a rat. Just make sure that your bubble is not fed purely by the MSM.

jsiebrits 14 November 2024 03:51 PM

And make sure that your bubble is not fed by Fox et al...

Mike 14 November 2024 04:34 PM

So Musk is now in charge of "cleaning up" the departments that (will or will not) allow him to release crashing Robotaxis, make-believe-they-work robots and crazy brain implants on humankind. No conflict of interest at all in sight ...

a***e@g***.com 14 November 2024 04:53 PM

Trumps already chooses people based on one factor and one factor only, loyalty. You know who else did that while making an independent branch that holds power to keep the gov in line? I'll give you a hint, his initials are A.H. Everything about his campaign was a massive red flag.
