Petro SA confirmed in a statement this afternoon that Sizani “has been recused from operations, pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation”.

“PetroSA has appointed Mr Mmete Fusi as the acting group chief executive officer effective immediately. Mr Fusi has vast leadership experience and knowledge of the continent’s minerals resources, oil and gas, ports and railways infrastructure.”

The SOE did not disclose the nature of the investigations.

The news comes as PetroSA grapples with financial and governance issues that have been bubbling to the surface.

Only PetroSA’s trading division and Ghana asset have been deemed financially viable enough for inclusion in the new South African National Petroleum Company.

The state-owned enterprise has also long been accused of lacking in transparency, and a looming court case may shed light on two of its controversial deals.

Phezulu Natural Energy Resources recently filed a case in the Cape Town Division of the High Court demanding that PetroSA disclose internal documents showing how and why it selected Russia’s Gazprombank and scandal-plagued Equator Holdings for multibillion-rand gas deals.

The shake-up is also the latest round of musical chairs at the top of a troubled South African state-owned enterprise — a state of affairs that is hardly ideal. DM

While they are at it : find the details of how strategic oil reserves were sold on the cheap to Glencore around same time that Glencore sold that coal mine to the Guptas.

David Bristow 18 October 2024 07:10 AM

Funny that one, what with all that oil just lying around unused ... (and waiting to be pillaged)

So the stock could be rotated !!! It never left the tanks and was bought back at a higher price all around Christmas.

Another day, another tender scandal, another smiling Cadre.

Do you not think that, as we return to true democracy, suspension of senior management in SOEs will become more common?

Robbed Blind 18 October 2024 12:10 PM

I wouldn’t hold my breath

Jimbo Smith 18 October 2024 08:16 AM

Just another day and the merry go round of failed SOE's & "Executives" continues unabated. No doubt, this cadre will be suspended on full pay & if dismissed probably a huge golden parachute. It is a mess beyond belief...tomorrow rolls on!!

I trust without a salary.

Your trust is misplaced!

Mossgas Never made sense. It was a criminal waster of money and resources justified by sanctions against Apartheid. It should have been shut down in 1994. PetroSA is merely a trough for privileged cadres.

Joe Soap 18 October 2024 12:21 PM

It will become more of a trough having bought the refinery in dirtbin, which is going to need massive investment to brought back into operation considering, the flood damage of a few years ago and the requirement to produce more environmentally friendly fuel.

He either stole or wouldn't - it one of the two. With Petro SA's reputation it is probably the latter.
