The Eastern Cape police commissioner, Nomthetheleli Mene, has described a deadly ambush of 10 members of the community police forum in Godini Village, Qumbu, as senseless and brutal.
The patrollers were at Lugongozo Junior Secondary School when they were attacked just before 11pm on Sunday.
According to police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, the patrollers were attacked by “at least” eight men with rifles and handguns who opened fire on them. Six people died at the scene and four were seriously injured and rushed to hospital. Nkohli said that according to information from residents, the patrollers were getting ready for their nighttime patrol.
The motive for the ambush was unknown at this stage.
The shooting follows the murder of 18 people in Lusikisiki on 27 September. Three suspects that may be connected to this incident were expected in court today (Monday). DM
