Alize van der Merwe and a second kidnapping victim dropped off at police station in Eastern Cape

A Cape Town woman who was kidnapped on 20 September 2024 while on her way to the popular Umngazi Resort in Port St Johns was found alive on Thursday after her kidnappers dropped her and another woman, who was kidnapped three days before her, off at the Sulenkama Police Station in the Eastern Cape.

The Hawks confirmed on Thursday afternoon that Alize van der Merwe (39) and another kidnapping victim were dropped off at the Sulenkama Police Station in the Eastern Cape.

Hawks spokesperson Ndiphilwe Mhlakuvana said the second kidnapping victim, a visitor to the area from China, was taken on the road between Barkly East and Elliot three days before Van der Merwe.

“It looks like they were kept in one place,” he said.

Mhakuvana said the Hawks put the suspects under pressure, and he believes that this is why the women were dropped off at the police station. Sulenkama is about 180km from Port St Johns and 130km from Elliot.

“The investigators are still talking to them, but they will soon take them to the closest health facility for medical treatment,” he said.

At this stage, Mhakuvana said they hadn’t linked this case to the shooting incident where four suspects were killed and a fifth wounded when the police’s tactical response team searched a house in Keiskammahoek on Wednesday. Keiskammahoek is about a five-hour drive away from where the women were found.

“The Hawks can confirm that two kidnapping victims, a 39-year-old and 34-year-old, were released by the suspects on 26 September 2024 at approximately 12.15 in the afternoon. It is reported the victims were dropped off by a white Toyota single-cab bakkie near Sulenkama Police Station. Their release came after the pressure exerted by the police on the suspects. Further reports divulged that the victims are traumatised, and they are going to be taken to the nearest hospital for medical attention,” he added.

Mike Bolhuis Investigators confirmed in a statement that one of the women was Van der Merwe.

Van der Merwe was kidnapped on 20 September 2024 at about 1pm.

She had been travelling towards Umngazi Resort at Port St Johns, driving a Toyota Fortuner ,where she was accosted by unknown suspects. Her vehicle was reportedly found abandoned not far from the resort. DM

A bakkie drops these badly abused women IN FRONT OF a police station and nobody knows the registration number or who the driver was?

Unconfirmed reports suggest the women had to wake up the officer on duty when they went in.

After they filled in the Visitors' Book with the private security guard outside the SAPS station.

Yip, the safest place to do it.

Another keyboard warrior. I personally know many of the cops that litterally never slept since this woman was kidnapped. The scary part of this is the privateers that use this to badmouth SAPS, to make them look good to make money from vulnerable victims's family. Crime became big business now.

I have absolutely no doubt that what you've said is true but the fact remains that a bakkie with the two kidnapping victims was driven right though an area that should have been part of the search without being stopped and so there couldn't have been any roadblocks in place in that area.

THE Transkei is vast, Sulenkama is not near PSJ or the coast, that 88km to Mthatha would take you 2 hours...and white bakkies, with no numberplates is as common as Taxis in the CBD. Google location and you will see - least expected place to appear. But trust me, the hunt is on.

"I personally know many of the cops that litterally never slept since this woman was kidnapped." Really? Which station are they based at?

They are "going to be taken" for medical care AFTER they have been interrogated?! Who was manning the police station as they were dropped off - did the Hawks know the kidnappers to "put pressure on them?? very fishy

I am very pleased to hear that these poor victims were returned and it certainly indicates that the kidnappers were worried about getting caught. So, recognising the seriousness of the crime I am very hopeful that the police will continue to push and that they will be caught soon.

Having to wake up the duty officer, sounds about right.

Bad language usage - suspects should be interrogated and cannot be unknown.

Kidnapping is not slowing! It is growing! We need mass displays by the public - close everything for a day - to let govt know of this terror! Transkei is not a lone district in this scourge! Comments below indicate very "soft" rejection of the potential kidnapping tragedies ahead!

Thank heavens the ladies are safe. Now, I suspect it is past time to apprehend the scalliwags and hang them up by their knuts. I would advocate that it be done in the local 'town-square' so as to discourage any of the other potential 'knappers' from even thinking of kidnapping ANYBODY.

We were in Port St Johns in January, as well as other places in Transkei. Its such a beautiful place, but it seems the cops have lost control. There was a taxi war in Port St Johns days after we left. Now Lusikisiki . . . tragic. Cops must regain control. Can they?

Two other things: Alize was driving a Fortuner, probably the most popular vehicle to hijack. Second: A Chinese national was kidnapped. This is terrible for tourism. That news will get wide coverage in China. We really need to do more to protect tourists in SA, and SAPS not up to it right now.
