2024 World News Day: Choose Truth

It’s time to break the death spiral.

Years of upheaval in the media space have taken their toll globally. Media market failure, caused by many swirling currents of the last 30 years, and, sadly, often with the participation of the media itself, has led to the demise of established business models and, with them, our ability to deliver on our mandate.

And there’s more trouble on the horizon, including:

  • AI as both a business and media tool and a weapon of war
  •  Resurgent global authoritarianism
  •  Incoming alliance between Big Tech and autocrats
  •  Climate crisis that’s now upon us.

We are running out of time

Choose Truth is a campaign designed to gather global media around the issues we can agree on. It is part of the 2024 World News Day which is held on 28 September and is supported by 800 partners globally and is a blueprint of collaborations to come.

If we all want global, fact-based news media not to go extinct and, with it, global democracies, we will all have to do things differently.

Choose Truth is not a single-day occasion, but a starting point of a continuous effort to address the above problems seriously, with renewed vigour.

The issues that we can easily agree on, like the importance of media literacy, need to be tackled with haste – and we have at our disposal tools to do it.

What is crucial for these to succeed is a willingness to tackle the tough issues, find effective solutions and then implement them with great energy.

Project Kontinuum is designed to be one such place for this type of effort. DM

I disagree. It reminds me of Catholic inquisition against Galilei, the very title of Soviet "Prabda" and more recent Blair and Bush jr "crusade" for Democray after 9/11. Since no agency owns the Truth, the best way to move on is Freedonm of Opinio, allowing ideas competing against each other.

I will happily support honest journalism if newspapers do not punt a specific ideology/viewpoint. An honest report of a newsworthy incident is seldomly reported objectively, for the reader to form his/her own opinion.

Charles van der Merwe Sep 26, 2024, 01:57 PM

Agreed.

In the case of the Marikana bloodbath incident, Branco punted the mineworkers, with scant sympathy for the security guards doing their jobs. Left wing propaganda is acceptable, whilst any conservative opinion is "far right".

alastairmgf Sep 27, 2024, 08:06 PM

Exactly. The way leftist news outlets reported on Marikana was shocking.

Extremism, and propaganda, lives on both the left and the right.

In Russia they have 2 main newspapers. One is called Pravda, and the other is called Isvestia. The english translation, is The Truth, and The News. The local joke there is, there is no truth in the news, and there no news in the truth.

SkyNews, BBC, CNN, FOX and their ilk have turned news into entertainment. Their "political commentators" & "war correspondents" lie and twist the truth to suit an agenda. Now is the time for the media to start telling the real news. Because AI can also lie and journalists will be out of a job.

Another example of editorial policy getting in the way of the truth is the whole way Covid was handled. I was extremely disappointed in the way DM conducted itself. The blatant censorship of alternative viewpoints was striking and now that the truth emerges there is not the hint of apology.

B M Sep 27, 2024, 11:13 PM

@Agf Agf: What truth regarding alternative viewpoints related to Covid has emerged?

alastairmgf Sep 28, 2024, 07:24 AM

Pfizer have admitted at an EU enquiry that their vaccine did not protect one from getting Covid nor from passing it on. They say they never claimed this. Moderna withdrawn worldwide. Excess deaths. Masking declared ineffective. School closures and consequent damage to children’s mental health.

Your claims are factual, but how is that emerging truth? How was it censored on DM? Why should DM apologise?
