Announcement on Daily Maverick’s cost reduction and reorganisation

As part of ongoing efforts to ensure Daily Maverick’s long-term stability and success, the company is initiating a reduction of about 15% of operating costs.

The leadership team has worked hard to limit job losses, but this process will result in several retrenchments and the restructuring of some functions.

This decision comes after careful consideration and exhausting other options at a time when the media industry continues to struggle under growing economic pressure.

Daily Maverick has always strived to operate in a lean startup manner, while also trying to fill the void left by a disrupted industry.

Growing a news publisher to this scale and influence was a miracle in this market context, where it is eight times harder to operate than developed countries. Sadly, it is no longer possible to do so under the current circumstances.

Daily Maverick founding CEO Styli Charalambous said:

“We understand that this is a difficult period for everyone at Daily Maverick, especially our colleagues who will be directly affected. We are committed to providing as much support as possible, including assistance for new work opportunities, and to get through this as quickly and with as much care as possible.”

On the broader challenges and what is needed to sustain journalism:

“Without legislative changes to incentivise and encourage support from philanthropic entities, corporates and the public, the sustainability of journalism will continue to be out of reach.

“An industry that creates so much value for the world shouldn’t be struggling this much. The market context is broken and we urgently need policy reform to fix it. Nothing else can.”

Earlier this year, Daily Maverick shut down for a day to highlight the crisis that the global journalism industry faces.

These problems persist and are costing society dearly. One only needs to look at the state of our cities, stagnating economy, health and education sectors to see the impact of corruption on our daily lives.

Your questions answered:

Does this mean Daily Maverick is closing down?

No. These measures are being put in place to ensure we can continue our public service journalism. Daily Maverick has navigated disruption many times and we are confident that we will continue to do so successfully to best serve South Africa.

How many people will be affected?

Restructuring to any degree will affect the entire organisation, both through retrenchment and the absorption of responsibilities and duties. Some freelancers and contractors will be affected, but in terms of retrenchment, we have minimised this to about 5% of our permanent employees.

Has Daily Maverick lost funding?

Daily Maverick has a diversified revenue stream comprising philanthropy, advertising and a voluntary reader revenue membership programme. (Despite claims from some lunatics, we do not get any CIA funding). Some philanthropic entities have reduced their support of journalism, and of South Africa in general. Advertising revenue for news publishers continues to decline as a result of the disruption of the advertising space by “Big Tech” and an economy still reeling from 15 years of State Capture.

Why doesn’t Daily Maverick just put up a paywall?

Daily Maverick exists to serve the South African public. By limiting access to our journalism to only those who can afford to pay, we also limit the impact our journalism has.

With ever-increasing levels of dangerous mis- and disinformation, it is our duty and responsibility to ensure that the truth is both defended and accessible to all, even if that translates into a greater financial burden on ourselves. DM

Dear Daily Maverick, my sincere apologies, it is to ghastly to contemplate and I truly admire your work and supporting you as much as affordable. PLEASE keep the faith and continue the inspirational work - remember - "Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase."

Hi guys. I do think you could ask each current member to increase their monthly amount, and give them a link and easy way to do that. Maybe you have already done that? Even then I would not find it bothersome if you were to ask (again) for some more money.

Lawrence Sisitka Sep 19, 2024, 03:14 PM

100% Jan. Those of us who value both the journalism and the space it creates for our own small offerings, should be able to find it in ourselves to increase our financial support.

gian Fonto Sep 19, 2024, 03:17 PM

Agree Jan, If we up our contribution by a 100 bucks, it could make a difference. DM make it easy one click!

Agreed - get us to all increase by 15% and we'll do it.

Agree.

Thank you deeply, deeply from this former journalist, still writing, for your essential public work. The little I am able to pay each month is a pittance compared to what you deserve. Please, all you who read and rely on the DM for free, PLEASE contribute to their running costs. Don't wait. Now.

Chris Storey Sep 19, 2024, 03:38 PM

The contribution that daily Maverick has made to our country is immeasurable. A future without Daily Maverick is unimaginable. I will be doubling my subscription. If there is a way of donating a subscription to a community organization that will benefit, this will add even more value.

Lynn Mcgregor Sep 19, 2024, 05:23 PM

Please let us know the different ways we can contribute financially to DM Thank you

Linda Halliday Sep 19, 2024, 05:11 PM

Carry on doing what you do. Also, keep reminding us of how important it is to support you. We do this because we believe what you believe about journalism. I agree with suggestions here, make it much easier for us to pay. We dont mind paying. We just forget or get distracted.

Moraig Peden Sep 19, 2024, 05:14 PM

I hugely value the DM, and pay what I can. I support the idea of more pressure on those who are still reading for free. Sometimes its just a matter of getting them to take the time to sign up as an insider. Keep the pressure up- you are crucial to our democracy!

Robert Breyer Sep 19, 2024, 07:31 PM

Brkic just resigned. Coincidence? ' 5% reduction'. That's about 1 employee? 'eight times harder'. How do you come up with that #? Business 101: Too many niche news web sites in SA chasing the same audience: DM, M&G, BizNews, etc. Maybe the industry needs consolidation ?

Antoinette Jurgens Sep 20, 2024, 08:37 AM

I really appreciate the work that you do to expose corruption in SA, but you are extremely left leaning with your constant jabs at Donald Trump. I think you might be alienating potential contributors with your clear politics. Your moderation policy does not encourage opposing views.

alastairmgf Sep 20, 2024, 09:38 AM

Spot on. A little less woke left wing stuff will go a long way to encourage more support. Anti Israel, anti Trump, anti DA, doesn’t help.

Beverley Roos-Muller Sep 20, 2024, 12:11 PM

One does not need to be 'extremely left' to jab at Donald Trump. One just needs to be sane. And worried about the future of the world, not only the USA. DM knows its task. Fearless journalism is not 'neutral', it's honest, even at the expense of alienating those on the wrong side of history.

Conduct a survey or send out requests. I think most Insiders would be willing to increase their "subscriptions". The subscriptions is almost free already if the Insider uses the PnP vouchers. Increasing the subscription (voluntarily) is not all that onerous.

Robert K Sep 20, 2024, 02:00 PM

I am ignorant of the business aspects of running a platform like DM, but would it not help if you got rid of the DM168 newspaper and its e-version and concentrate on the online platform? I find DM168 a rather lengthy and tedious document to digest. However, I will increase my monthly contribution.

C B Sep 20, 2024, 04:21 PM

I agree with Jan Badenhorst. Would gladly contribute more per month if it help. We need you! Our country needs you!

Patterson Alan John Sep 21, 2024, 01:45 PM

I have just doubled my monthly subscription. Hopefully I am the start of a rush for Insiders and free users to either increase their subs, or to join us in ensuring that all the jobs are saved and DM can continue to do their exceptional work. It is many individual drops that make the Amazon River.
