Choir pupils with visual disabilities from Khanyisa Special School in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, are heading to the US to compete on America’s Got Talent, a televised talent competition that attracts a variety of performers including singers, dancers, comedians and magicians.
To prepare to showcase their talent in the US, the Khanyisa Special School choir members have been releasing a cappella songs on YouTube.
The members – Lithalethu Miki, Avela Hulana, Lisakhanya Tunce, Sesona Xengxe, Indiphile Foslara, Akohlulwa Gqirana, Ayabulela Gashi, Sinoxolo Lantu, Siphumelele Cenga, Saluse Mfusi, Sinothando Zozi and Oyintando Bangani – received an invitation to the competition early in 2024. Their conductor, Gcina Mqadi, was thrilled about the opportunity.
‘Everything is possible’
Despite their shock and excitement, the choir members remain grounded and focused on the opportunity.
Indiphile Foslara, a partially blind choir member from Dikeni (Alice), said she had never in her wildest dreams thought that she would go to America.
“I grew up listening to gospel music because my parents loved it. When I got to school, we created choirs and our conductor made us trend on social media. Everything is possible. Even if you are a blind child, there is Khanyisa Special School where you will get the best schooling.”

Siphumelele Cenga from Peddie, who is also partially blind, echoed Foslara’s sentiments, emphasising the significance of the pupils’ journey. “This is special because it shows that even if you have disabilities, you can prosper in life and attain your dreams…
“I want people to learn from us that they are also capable of anything.”
The choir’s journey began just more than a year ago, and their harmony and dedication have already garnered them 3,000 subscribers and more than 10,000 YouTube views with their captivating Gwijo songs. This style of call-and-response a cappella singing is deeply rooted in Xhosa and Sotho culture.
