MK party welcomes passing of Bela Bill by National Assembly

President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to sign the Bela Bill on September 13, drawing mixed reactions. The MK party praises it as a crucial advance for education, while Theuns Eloff, chairperson of the Trust for Afrikaans Education, and leading unions gear up for a legal battle.

Shameful capitulation by Steenhuizen, capitulating to the faux outrage about a nothingburger, stirred up by tired, woke media hacks.

Johnny Bravo 12 September 2024 01:59 PM

Thank goodness. The emotional pain and mental agony this caused me is beyond words. I applaud our justice minister for sticking to it though. Cadres never cause me emotional harm.

ttshililo2 12 September 2024 02:23 PM

?????. Let’s cue the applause for praising water for being wet.

Willem Boshoff 12 September 2024 02:41 PM

LOL the bar is pretty low. Except for the ANC who has no standard of conduct.

Grumpy Old Man 12 September 2024 02:45 PM

Tumelo, whereas I agree with you that this was an appointment that should never have been made in the first instance, we do need to be thankful when common sense eventually prevails - moreover cos we live in a political space where common sense is as rare as Hens' teeth

D'Esprit 12 September 2024 03:04 PM

Yip! I wonder if it was public pressure or a trade off at last night's dinner? Either way, it puts pressure on other parties to get rid of their own planks in the eye. Or it would if they had scruples.

ttshililo2 12 September 2024 07:34 PM

Whilst I want to sing and clap with you, it seems to me what sank this bigot is in fact not his bigotry- it was the Russian agenda that sank him. The DA or John could care less about bigotry, however the optics of a potential Russian “sleeper” was too much for the Brenthurst foundation.

D'Esprit 13 September 2024 08:25 AM

Many of us were disgusted at the appointment way before the Rosatom gig came up - based purely on his bigoted comments. Not everything goes back to Oppenheimer think tanks.

m***2@g***.com 12 September 2024 02:29 PM

Dispute resolution mechanism is the only hope of resolving so much tension among opposing parties. It needs to be handled with care, open mindedness and total sincerity. We need to maintain the GNU at all costs. The GNU is the best thing that has happened to us under the circumstances.

D'Esprit 12 September 2024 02:49 PM

Agreed!

D'Esprit 12 September 2024 02:47 PM

I'm really hoping that the ANC, DA and other GNU partners are able to take a mature and constructive approach to sorting out these issues over the next few months and years. We need stability in government, and we need to keep the lunatic left out of power. They're just not progressive, at all.

N***i@g***.com 12 September 2024 06:22 PM

I doubt they can even spell "progressive" correctly. That is a bunch of angry, corrupt houdinis that are led by an old vexatious litigant. That ship would sail to nowhere if messaging by GNU partners can be clear with none trying to show up the other

D'Esprit 13 September 2024 08:26 AM

Beautifully put! :)

D'Esprit 12 September 2024 02:53 PM

Pretty measured comments all round from Steenhuisen - I applaud him for that. And especially for admitting he got the appointment of Cabanac so, so, badly wrong! Hopefully the DA learns from this going forward! And maybe other parties could look in the mirror a bit too?

Johnny 12 September 2024 05:50 PM

Exposé se foot. A free exchange of ideas is a mark of functional democracy, having someone fired and/or for his freely articulated views is Totalitarian, this is especially true when you disagree with them.

D'Esprit 13 September 2024 08:30 AM

You seem to have replied to the wrong comment, but ho-hum: if if Roman 'Rosatom' Cabanac stood by his freely exchanged ideas, why did he delete them all as soon as a lovely paycheck was in the offing?

Mary Reynolds Reynolds 12 September 2024 02:57 PM

Congratulations to DM staff for your earlier excellent exposé of Roman Cabanac and his appointment by Steenhuisen. The request for Cabanac now to resign must be, in large part, thanks to your report.

D'Esprit 12 September 2024 03:13 PM

100%, Mary! DM must be applauded for this!

Malcolm McManus 12 September 2024 03:36 PM

I'm wondering if all those DM readers who were so eager to find a new political home over this incident have settled at their new homes yet. Hope so. Anyway, I am glad the DA have come to their senses, unlike other parties who just steam roll over their problems.

D'Esprit 12 September 2024 03:57 PM

Haven't settled anywhere yet. Open to offers (I'd make a cracking chief of staff). Not contemplating a life as a social media influencer (sic) though.

Over The Right 12 September 2024 04:25 PM

This is called putting pressure on the party to make the right decisions. I believe that the pressue of media, comments, direct emails to DA made a difference. No way will I support Trumpist/Russo appointees. DA will no longer have my unconditional support, they need to earn it.

D'Esprit 12 September 2024 04:35 PM

Spot on!

Johnny 12 September 2024 05:43 PM

He has a different view on things than you guys do and therefore deserves to be fired. I'll turn off the lights on the way out.

D'Esprit 13 September 2024 08:32 AM

'A different view' is not what he has: race-baiting, dog-whistling bigotry is what he offers. I don't think even Trump would stoop that low, albeit him and Musk are great pals.

Malcolm McManus 12 September 2024 05:43 PM

No doubt it makes a difference to criticise daft appointments but to threaten to stop supporting a party that makes exponentially less glaring mistakes than the rest is a bit extreme. Don't threaten. Just join the party that's better than them. As soon as I find out I will join them too.

Robert Frey 12 September 2024 03:50 PM

John Steenhuisen has set and example of how to rectify bad decision and hope others (parties) will follow this example! However, I can't help wondering if this was a planned tactical stunt of JS to show off/others what has to happen in such circumstances!

N***i@g***.com 12 September 2024 05:25 PM

DA blundered and it backfired terrible and had to bend under pressure. It's commendable

Malcolm McManus 12 September 2024 06:11 PM

Commendable and expected, which is a lot more than can be said for most, if not all other parties. Admittedly I would have preferred a more speedy resolution particularly in light of the backlash.

Henry Henry 12 September 2024 04:13 PM

Spineless character, this Spohn Speenhuizen.

James Francis 12 September 2024 04:26 PM

Then go vote for a party that cares more about protecting its tainted deployees.

N***i@g***.com 12 September 2024 05:22 PM

You were never a DA supporter in the first place. Go use another vehicle for your racialist views, not the DA

Fanie Rajesh 13 September 2024 01:30 AM

Do you not see how valueless the comment is to the world at large? Why you bothered even writing it is a mystery.

James Francis 12 September 2024 04:25 PM

Thank you, DA, you have shown that principles still matter. Unlike the ANC protecting a tainted Justice Minister or the MK putting clearly biased individuals in oversight of our judges. This is why I vote DA.

N***i@g***.com 12 September 2024 05:19 PM

ANC will continue bleed for their indecision against transgressors in their midst. They are so pathetic

Malcolm McManus 12 September 2024 05:47 PM

Agreed. Making mistakes is less important than what you do to rectify them. This undesirable error in judgment shows the DA listens to the people and their criticism. It took a bit of time but not forever like others.

Keith Wilson 12 September 2024 04:33 PM

Well done John. Real politicians with the country's best interests at heart do the right thing. It's refreshing to see a politician admit they made a mistake. Let's hope CR & Co can learn from this. LOL

Skinyela 12 September 2024 04:33 PM

Is this live blog permanent or temporary?

D'Esprit 13 September 2024 08:34 AM

Temporary. As the song says, nothing lasts forever, even cold November rain.* * No, I have no idea how long it will last! :)

N***i@g***.com 12 September 2024 04:50 PM

I cannot celebrate when someone loses an opportunity. But for the good of the country, I think this is a well deserved call made by JS, regardless of whose hand is behind his move. Once again, DA continues to asserted itself as the only part that acts decisively against wrong doers. Its commended

Sydney Kaye 12 September 2024 05:01 PM

Will I'm glad be took my advice (with others)instead of the reckless egging on he got on Politicsweb

Bob 12 September 2024 05:09 PM

Didn't do proper due diligence? Didn't he spend 5 minutes googling "Roman Cabanac"? Because that's all it would have taken.

N***i@g***.com 12 September 2024 05:13 PM

However, this prevents the defenders of Cabanac and his racially charged views, with a golden opportunity to come out in strong rebuke of John Steenheizen, for victimization and unfair dismissal of Roman. This could be revelation that these are not DA members, but some far rights, masquerading as DA

N***i@g***.com 12 September 2024 08:34 PM

The concept that “goodness always wins over evil” is rooted in the idea that, in the long run, good efforts and virtuous actions tend to prevail over malicious or harmful actions.

Slightly Irritated 14 September 2024 07:50 AM

Anything the MK or EFF welcomes is not good news for South Africa.
