Trump Special Counsel Files Updated 2020 Election Indictment

The US special counsel appointed to investigate claims of interference in the 2020 election is pressing ahead with the prosecution of Donald Trump after facing a setback this summer from the Supreme Court.

Special Counsel Jack Smith on Tuesday filed an updated indictment following the high court’s blockbuster decision finding Trump at least partially immune from prosecution related to his official acts as president.

The new indictment cuts certain allegations related to Trump’s communications with government officials — including the section related to his alleged efforts to involve the Justice Department — but features the same four charges accusing him of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

It removes one of the six unindicted co-conspirators who wasn’t named but whose description matched former Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark.

The latest activity by a federal grand jury in Washington is expected to kick off a fresh round of legal wrangling between Smith’s office and Trump’s lawyers over whether the updated indictment can survive under Supreme Court’s more expansive definition of presidential immunity from criminal charges.

The indictment includes allegations that the justices had suggested Trump might be immune from, such as his alleged efforts to pressure Vice President Mike Pence to intervene on his behalf.

In the last 100 hours, two prominent ex-democrats - JFK Junior and Tulsi Gabbard - hot on the heels of Elon Musk - have defected to Donald Trump - changing the landscape of American politics for the foreseeable future. Yet what does the Daily Maverick report? Some mickey mouse lawfare against Trump, that has already been discredited by the US Supreme Court. I can't figure out if your TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome) is because you are paid shills or because you are simply naive cub reporters that believe everything you see on TV. Just as well Elon doesn't take you seriously, otherwise you would be out of a job.

Brilliant comment. Bang on.

"Some Mickey Mouse lawfare against Trump" Grand juries have handed down four indictments in four courts, totaling 34 counts. He has been convicted on two, and sentencing is scheduled for next month. These are serious charges, not Mickey Mouse charges.

What charges, exactly?

American here in Cape Town. Let me fix this for you. "...changing the landscape of American politics for the foreseeable future." How are Kennedy and Gabbard going to do this? They are bit players in a much bigger production. Neither will have any impact on the election.

The Dee Em deleted my attempted reply but let me try again without the trigger words. In 1992 the independent Ross Perot effectively handed the election to Bill Cinton from Bush Senior. In 2024 Kennedy's defection to the red party effectively hands the six swing states to you-know-who. Gabbards military record and sanguine comments gives pause to blue voters who may want to reconsider their affiliation. This potentially alters the landscape not a political ruse that most Americans have seen clean through.
