TROUBLED WATERS

Swimming South Africa ducks and dives on questions about its governance structures

Swimming South Africa's leadership dodges questions on governance and eligibility issues, with attempts to probe their conduct met with silence, hinting at a pattern of opacity and disregard for accountability, as Daily Maverick's persistence in seeking answers continues to be stonewalled.

Swimming South Africa (SSA) has evaded answering questions about its governance structures put forward by the media and its own constituents.

Written questions from at least one prominent SSA member about eligibility issues before last weekend’s SSA elections were ignored. Similarly, media attempts to probe goings-on at the body have been ignored.

At the weekend, Daily Maverick reported that SSA held its quadrennial annual general meeting (QAGM) at which four members nominated to serve on the body’s next executive committee were, according to SSA’s constitution, ineligible for re-election.

Before the publication of the article, Daily Maverick provided SSA’s president, Alan Fritz — who was one of the four members and stood unopposed for re-election — with the right of reply.

Attempts to find out who was elected to the executive committee were unsuccessful. Since publication on Sunday, Daily Maverick has attempted to contact Fritz via WhatsApp messaging, email and phone calls.

The only response Daily Maverick received was a WhatsApp message on Monday from Fritz, stating that he would phone back at a later stage, which he did not do.

SSA members who oppose the current leaders were not invited to the QAGM.

While they can ignore the media (although questions and probing won’t stop), the leaders of SSA are likely to face a high court review of their conduct brought by the law firm Becker Kemp Attorneys.

If there is nothing untoward in their conduct, why not show constituents and the media the clauses in their constitution or in any other documentation which allow board members to serve upwards of three terms? This shouldn’t be a mystery.

A familiar pattern

This method of dealing with problems is not new for SSA. In February, Daily Maverick reported on the swimming federation’s decision to not send the national men’s and women’s water polo teams to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

SSA CEO Shaun Adriaanse said they did not believe that either team was good enough to win a medal at the Games and therefore should not go — despite qualifying as Africa’s best.

He did not respond to further queries.

Current and former water polo athletes and coaches told Daily Maverick they were mistreated by SSA after the publication of the story. Adriaanse, however, chose to not respond to any of the accusations.

Daily Maverick asked for a high-performance plan for water polo from SSA for the next Olympic cycle to ensure the team would be deemed “ready” for Los Angeles 2028.

There has been no response to this request, made at the end of February.

Daily Maverick’s correspondence with former women’s national water polo coaches Sarah Kravitz and Delaine Mentoor — who were removed from their positions without clear reasons — showed that SSA is accustomed to cutting communication. DM

This is exactly how SSA treat their athletes and members. any communication asking questions for the benefit of athletes is just ignored. and there is no one who can hold them accountable. Even Sascoc seems powerless.

Athletes are you petrified to say anything as they know they will be immediately suspended and any attempt to engage will be ignored. Thus the abuse is allowed to continue. The SSA constitution is largely unconstitutional and is designed to keep athletes quiet and allow the executive free reign.

Thanks to the Daily Maverick for exposing this. The only SSA is adept at doing is lying and obfuscation. One can only hope that the Department of Sport launches an enquiry into SSA. Kudos to Kemp Bekker for taking the initiative. Time for change to save aquatics.

As always, follow the money, expose the rot. To be honest, why have ex or current members of SSA not gone to court?

james t. smith Aug 28, 2024, 07:22 AM

The SSA consitution forbids it on threat of suspension. And once you are suspended your career is over.. as SSA ignore all attempts to try and engage. It is also very costly to do so which is what SSA bank on. SSA ignore, then isolate, then discredit the complainant with lies and rumours. So...

Something smelly in the water. For teams to qualify for Olympics and not go is just weird.

MaverickMe Aug 28, 2024, 09:20 AM

The sponsors of our swimmers should cut off all funding until it is resolved.

Brett Redelinghuys Aug 28, 2024, 10:46 AM

This would hurt out athletes. What they need to do is hold the exec accountable. Ask these questions, ask others who are asking the pertinent questions. Force transpancy and stop allowing tick box compliance

Werner Hautmann Aug 28, 2024, 10:27 AM

This has been going on for years the federations keep getting ask to pay more every year but get nothing in return but more restrictive rules. there is no support for swimming in the smaller federations where the swimming infrastructure is collapsing. Where is the money?

Brett Redelinghuys Aug 28, 2024, 10:50 AM

Werner, we need you, the club's, the athletes to ask these questions of your District and Province. These people must then ask if the National body. If you and I let them off the hook, the merry-go-round continues. Yes they will suspended, but not is all stand together. Stop the rot.

I wonder if Mr Fritz was at the Paris Olympics?

Brett Redelinghuys Aug 28, 2024, 10:53 AM

He was not. However there were a number of admin people there. Some have got themselves appointed to positions at World Aquatics (and a nice bonus that gives...). Our athletes Sayed home as Mr Fritz calls them "Holiday Makers"...

Pieter van de Venter Aug 28, 2024, 11:38 AM

Whether it is a municipality, sports federation, government agency, etc, the playbook is the same. Get voted in or appointed and then transform it to dust. Look at CSA, Comrades (it is not the same comrades as the ANC)m etc to see what happens when you appoint rentseekers into the positions.

Stef Terblanche Sep 27, 2024, 05:30 PM

This is now the established pattern in SA - a clique of ‘administrators’ take over the controlling bodies of different sports codes without any/actual experience as athletes, turning these into their personal fiefdoms where corruption, theft and bullying of protesters reign supreme.
