How Cape Town’s bloody gang scourge creeps into the city amid surge in deadly shootings

As gang violence escalates in Cape Town, two high-profile trials involving figures like Nafiz Modack, Mark Lifman and Jerome "Donkie" Booysen shed light on the pervasive reach of crime from historic gang territories to the heart of the city, illustrating that criminal activity knows no bounds.

While gang shootings seem to have recently surged across various suburbs in the Mother City, two key trials are developing which point to the different types of crime that have gripped Cape Town over the past seven or so years.

Nafiz Modack is among the main accused in the one trial. Mark Lifman and Jerome “Donkie” Booysen are among the main accused in the other. They have all pleaded not guilty.

Various crimes, which form the basis of those trials, and which underpin other court cases, show how lawbreaking has stretched from historic gang strongholds right into the city centre.

These prove that crime has no boundaries. DM
