Fact Check: Is SA’s new Home Affairs minister Zimbabwean?

The claim that new Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber is from Zimbabwe points to a xenophobic campaign waged on social media in recent years.

After President Cyril Ramaphosa announced his Cabinet for the Government of National Unity (GNU), it didn’t take long for commentary to start flying about the six DA ministers he appointed.

Among the claims that went viral on social media was that the new Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber was from Zimbabwe.

Is this true?

One of the X accounts to tweet this allegation belongs to Mehmet Vefa Dag, a wannabe politician who stood unsuccessfully for election for the Land Party.

Dag tweeted: “BREAKING NEWS: The Republic of South Africa demands answers as the DA Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber who is alleged to [be] a Zimbabwean foreigner is given a key position in [the] country. On Wikipedia Leon’s place of birth was changed 5 hours ago from Zimbabwe to South Africa, this is happening while South Africa is watching.”

He accompanied his tweet with a screenshot of Wikipedia showing the site’s edit panel, which Dag presented as evidence of the claim that Schreiber’s birthplace was hastily changed to South Africa after his appointment as minister.

When we checked Schreiber’s Wikipedia page a few hours later, all reference to his place of birth had been removed.

However, it was evident from the recent history of Schreiber’s entry that an edit war had been happening on his page since just after Ramaphosa’s Cabinet announcement.

A Wikipedia edit war is when two or more people repeatedly override each other’s edits.

In the case of the Leon Schreiber entry, the bone of contention appeared to be the minister’s place of birth.

But as other social media users pointed out to Dag, the edit screenshot that he shared showed the opposite of what he claimed. It showed that Schreiber’s place of birth had been edited to say he was born in the Harare suburb of Borrowdale in Zimbabwe, away from the original statement that he was born in the Northern Cape.

Schreiber, who is Afrikaans, has since confirmed that he was born in Piketberg in the Northern Cape and raised in Kleinzee, Namaqualand.

As is often the case, one of the giveaways that the claim about Schreiber was fake news was that the word ‘Zimbabwean', on the screenshot shared by Dag, was misspelt.

This particular piece of misinformation is likely part of a xenophobic campaign which has been waged on social media in recent years.

It is possibly also linked to the disappointment of Patriotic Alliance voters that their leader, Gayton McKenzie, was not named Home Affairs minister as the party had hoped.

McKenzie and the Patriotic Alliance ran an openly xenophobic election campaign under the slogan “Abahambe”, meaning “They must go”; a reference to foreigners.

Falsely claiming that Schreiber is Zimbabwean looks likely to be part of a misinformation war being waged against the newly formed GNU.

Ironically, Dag himself is originally Turkish. DM

If a person is a citizen of South Africa, they are South African. Period. No-one has the right to say they are not.

operatormo Jul 4, 2024, 10:33 PM

You most probably wouldn’t be saying that if the minister was from the ANC

Lucifer's Consiglieri Jul 4, 2024, 12:50 AM

Mehmet Vefa Dag, whoever he is, is a toxic source of disinformation, hate speech and racist bile. Welcome to the cesspool of social media. Unfortunately, however, the stuff that he publishes, seemingly with impunity, has an impact (and it is all deeply negative).

Quinton Bok Jul 4, 2024, 08:33 AM

Mehmet is a pro pally racist of note - amongst his many calls is the removal of Jews from Seapoint! He ignores the Nigerian drug lords also living there. A true rainbow nation builder….

Fanie Rajesh Ngabiso Jul 4, 2024, 10:08 AM

And look at his tweet: the twit can't even string a sentence together correctly.

Karel Vlok Jul 4, 2024, 07:08 PM

Give the man a break, his Mother tongue is Turkish (allegedly).

Donald bemax Jul 6, 2024, 11:06 AM

The whole issue created by Mehmet is just a storm of sour grapes in a toilet bowl..

Anna V Jul 4, 2024, 01:17 AM

To help quell disinformation, the headline should clearly state the finding (“Fact check finding: SA’s new Home Affairs minister is NOT Zimbabwean. Read on”) rather than basically repeating the original allegation except as a question. All the current headline achieves is to give credence to the allegation, act as click bait, and not settle anything for those who don’t decide to read the article.

Jeff Blumberg Jul 4, 2024, 07:41 AM

Absolutely correct. No-one tells the truth.

roger seldon Jul 4, 2024, 05:16 PM

Totally agree. Get with it DM!!

Kevin Venter Jul 4, 2024, 03:27 AM

Oh the irony, a Turkish immigrant to South Africa using Wikipedia as a Source of information to punt BS. He clearly either a) Doesnt know that Wikipedia is a community editable source of information so it cannot be taken as 100% fact or B)Did the edit himself before posting the tweet. What a pillock.

Rob Fisher Jul 4, 2024, 07:25 AM

If he is naturalized he can be anything he wants!

Frans Flippo Jul 4, 2024, 07:29 AM

It’s same the same old story. Mehmet’s followers, probably all disillusioned, disenfranchised people, prefer to buy into Mehmet’s narrative that their misery is caused by “those foreigners” instead of the plain truth which is that it is their fellow South Africans that have caused this: those in government (from the ministers down to the people that are supposed to be answering the phones at home affairs and the traffic department) and those not pulling their weight in society, refusing to work hard at school and in their workplace; and every eligible voter that just in these past elections didn’t vote, or voted for a party that will not make things better but only increase corruption and further erode what services, education, and infrastructure are left.

megapode Jul 4, 2024, 09:59 AM

It's not just the disenfranchised. ActionSA and the PA constantly peddle a narrative of all of our problems being caused by immigrants. Recently there was an exchange on X between a man who is born in Zimbabwe but also a South African citizen, and ActionSA's Atholl Trollip. Trollip told him to go back where he came from. This is straight out of the playbook of nice organisations like the British National Front and Nigel Farage's Reform Party. Blaming immigrants is almost fashionable in South African politics. Even the EFF were targetted because one of their MPs has Malawian antecedents. The better debate to have is what being "South African" is about. Gordon Brown has just written a very interesting piece (given today's events) of what being "British" really means. He can point to events and traditions in British history. With our divided history, a local equivalent of Brown would have a much harder job of pointing out our shared traditions and heritage, which saddens me. When I became a Citizen I had to swear to uphold and defend the Constitution. Maybe that's a good focal point for something that binds us all together despite party political differences.

Robert Gornal Jul 4, 2024, 11:25 AM

Nigel Farage's Reform Party is not against immigrantion but rather the number of immigrants that the UK cannot afford to house or employ. Get your facts right before lumping the Reform Party with the British National Front.

Viv King Jul 4, 2024, 11:28 AM

I noticed that "Defending the Constitution" was used a lot in the election and post election process, particularly by the DA. The rule of law is what scares most of those who have profited by corruption in its many forms. I think and hope that they realise their days are numbered. Time we put our differences aside and became creatively involved in building together. I think we have to start with Mazlow's hierarchy first before we start with traditions and heritage- that is where the conflicts are and not a place of common ground. Pretty much the only thing we South Africans have in common is a love of food and possibly wildlife (???apart from the poachers) We could start with a big braai, boerewors and biltong- no-one could argue with that surely? Vegan -friendly options as well.

Deon Du Plooy Jul 5, 2024, 09:48 AM

And watching the Boks.... probably the biggest unifying factor in ZA

JC Mouton Jul 4, 2024, 07:37 AM

Fact check. Piketberg is in the Swartland area of the Western Cape, not the Northern Cape.

Fanie Rajesh Ngabiso Jul 4, 2024, 08:23 AM

Whew! Lucky Picketburg :D

Fanie Rajesh Ngabiso Jul 4, 2024, 08:28 AM

Oops - that should read Piketberg

Quinton Bok Jul 4, 2024, 08:36 AM

Piketberg is indeed in the Swartland and not the NC. Kleinzee is in the NC. Clearly a journo error

Greeff Kotzé Jul 5, 2024, 11:49 AM

Indeed. It's truly embarrassing that a Fact Check article is itself in need of fact-checking.

Peter Slingsby Jul 4, 2024, 07:56 AM

Rebecca, there's a problem here: "Schreiber, who is Afrikaans, has since confirmed that he was born in Piketberg in the Northern Cape". But Piketberg, as anyone who knows anything about the Cape knows, is in the Western Cape - in fact only 120km from Cape Town and a lot further from Zimbabwe than Kleinzee.

Elizabeth Louw Jul 4, 2024, 08:15 AM

So what? This is trouble mongering Please focus on what should be fixed in the country and in Gauteng - especially now

Fanie Rajesh Ngabiso Jul 4, 2024, 08:26 AM

I think these articles are invaluable - and I also like the way the titles draw one in. It is important we all read these and are not able to be fooled by the viral false narratives that are literally killing our world.

D'Esprit Dan Jul 4, 2024, 11:05 AM

It's a pity the article didn't refer to Dag as Turkish-immigrant Dag' throughout, just to emphasize how ridiculous the poster is!

Amadeus Figaro Jul 4, 2024, 11:26 AM

It is not so much as xenophobia but this unimaginative source of mental and belief masturbation providing as much confirmation bias porn of GNU and Ramaphosa failure as they can. This is the same account that in trying to malign Ian Cameron dragged the Ian Cameron who happens to be the father of the former British prime minister David Cameron. South Africa is the only country where the term xenophobia is used wantonly. And why is that? Because the self serving elites of African nationalism and laissez faire capitalism with their ivory tower academics and non governmental organisations have for different reasons sought to shut out the citizens for from immigration policy which should be determined by resources, manpower and economic needs. And these are the people who during apartheid were no better than foreigners in their own country Even the DA and it’s many supporters who despite their new found political kinship with the western right in the fight against “wokeism” and its support for GOP talking points hypocritically cannot support strict immigration policy in SA. So the poor who must compete for very limited resources with millions imported indigent persons were clubbed down with the accusation of being xenophobic leading to the self justification through prefixing of immigration concerns with accusations of vice.

bas Jul 4, 2024, 10:28 PM

Huh?

David van Wyk Jul 5, 2024, 12:57 PM

huh, indeed.

Alan Watkins Jul 4, 2024, 12:08 PM

Storm in a teacup. Irrespective of where one is born, once naturalised one is South African. I doubt very much where Schreiber would claim he is born in SA if he was born in Zim as that is very easily verifiable. And then, worst case scenario, is a SA naturalised foreign born disqualified from being elected/appointed as MP/ minister? If not then stop whining

David van Wyk Jul 4, 2024, 12:57 PM

Thank you Rebecca. This piece and Diana's piece on Dinokeng's festival, made me subscribe to DM. You all are doing a great job. Please keep us informed.

Judging by the photo accompanying this, it's a wonder that someone has not yet claimed that Schreiber is Eugene Terreblanche's illegitemate son.
