June by-election results
IFP takes ANC’s uMzumbe cake; while the DA dominates in Beaufort West and Cape Town wards. Analyst Wayne Sussman breaks down the June by-elections:

PA shocks ANC in Soweto and Swellendam, ActionSA notches historic ward win in North West
The Patriotic Alliance won a ward off the ANC in Soweto and also in Swellendam in the Western Cape, while ActionSA won its first by-election by taking a ward off the ANC in a rural part of North West. The ANC retained seats in three other wards, with an impressive showing in Bonnievale in the Western Cape where it fielded a former Freedom Front Plus candidate.

DA wins Mpumalanga ward from ANC, while ANC hangs on in Mamelodi stronghold
The ANC retained a key ward in Mamelodi East, Tshwane with just over half of the vote, while MK and the DA made some inroads. The DA took a ward off the ANC in the small town of Ga-Nala (formerly Kriel) in the Emalahleni Municipality in Mpumalanga, while the ANC put in a dominant performance in the Elundini Municipality in rural Eastern Cape.

DA surges in Durban ward, strong ANC showing in Limpopo bodes well for national polls
The DA chalked up an impressive win in a seat in the south of Durban, eThekwini, in a ward that was far more competitive in 2024. The ANC registered a second successive strong showing in the Sekhukhune district in Limpopo, coasting to victory in a ward in the Ephraim Mogale Municipality.
