    Solid reliable journalism

  • Norman Greenfield says:

If contracted to NHI, will Doctors, Specialists & Hospitals be allowed to take private patients and be paid directly? Will health insurance plans still operate eg for surgery or other events?

    • Liz Coetzee says:

Hi Norman- whatever NHI does not cover, can be covered my medical schemes and I assume private Drs as well. The problem is that they still don’t know what they are going to cover, when they are going to cover it and how. So there is still a lot of unknown facts and therefore no answers to the questions. The there are all the legal challenges that also are going to challenge NHI. But according to many in the industry, this is going to take many many years to implement. All will be much the same for quite a while, unless the ruling party will have something up their sleeve. But if there is no or very little money allocated from treasury, then it would be difficult to implement anything. But for now, there are many questions and no meaningful answers.
