In coming weeks, two other RAE vessels - the Akademik Tryoshnikov and the Akademik Alexander Karpinsky - are expected to replenish in port. The latter has amassed vast oil and gas inventories off the Southern Ocean, prompting a coalition of 29 South African organisations to vow they won't let it off the hook for seismic blasting that resembles prospecting. This year, the ice-strengthened ship serviced not only Russia’s five polar research stations, she also conducted her usual weather, oceanography and other Southern Ocean studies.
