  • Gerhardt Strydom says:

What is the difference between commerce and politics? Well, in commerce patrons will part with their money. In politics, patrons part with their votes. In commerce, you get ROI, or return on investment. In politics, you often get promises and little else. Perhaps a feel-good moment when you put your ballot in the box for ‘your’ party. In South Africa, some parties (no names, you figure it out!) survive on the loyalty vote based on a struggle fought many decades ago. Those who fought in the struggle which ended in the 1990’s must be turning in their graves – they were the last selfless ones, although their successors still ride on the ‘selfless struggle’ ticket. Cyril, you are a diplomat of international standard. And perhaps a little bit of a hopeless romantic, like the maiden who still stares into the blue yonder, hoping for her prince to surface on the horizon to free her from the lonely tower. Cyril, neither you, the party or the country will be rescued by those you seem to be awaiting. Exactly who must, or will, renew the ANC or the country? Weren’t you the promised one?
Neo in the Matrix? Well, apparently not, and apparently there is no such person in the arena. No “Maximus! Maximus!” Gladiator is my all-time favourite piece of cinematic work. Unfortunately Cyril could not put the blade into the body of corruption and the fake Caesar still struts around. Well, Cyril couldn’t put the blade in himself now, could he?
