On the Wild Coast of the old Transkei, I witnessed several trucks collecting sand at one of the otherwise unspoilt beaches. Word on the street is that it started taking place on the beach in the photo after the local headman started demanding money from those gathering sand at another illegal sand mine in the area. Sand mining goes completely unchecked, thanks in large part to the widespread poverty of the community and a lack of any meaningful regulation. Image: Tim Gaunt Guiding
