The Year 2021 in Pictures

Here is an incomplete, yet surprising and moving gallery of images of this year's events around the world.
The Year 2021 in Pictures Orphaned mountain gorilla, Ndakasi, lies in the arms of her caregiver, Andre Bauma, on September 21, 2021 shortly before her death, which the park confirmed on September 26. Mr Bauma and others at the Senkwekwe Mountain Gorilla Center had cared for Ndakasi and other orphans for 13 years. Ndakasi had suffered a prolonged illness prior to her death. This is the only mountain gorilla orphanage in the world and takes in mountain gorilla orphans who have lost their families to poaching or conflict. A number of the orphans here were rescued from sales by poachers in sting operations carried out by Congolese National Park Authority (ICCN) rangers. (Photo by Brent Stirton/Getty Images)

Nurse, Gokalp Balli (L) and nurse, Bilge Koc from the Gevas Public Health Center vaccinate 74 year old Basra Payza with the Chinese Sinovac Coronavac vaccine during a house call in the village of Daldere on February 12, 2021 in Van, Turkey. Since shipments of the Chinese Sinovac Coronavac vaccine arrived in Turkey on December 30, 2020, medical teams across the country have been working house to house to administer the COVID-19 vaccine to elderly and vulnerable citizens. For the members of the Van City, Gevas Province Public Health Centre vaccination teams, who specialise in remote locations, often high in the mountains or villages that have become inaccessible by car, due to heavy snowfall and road closures, house calls pose many unique challenges. The teams are often forced to hand carry the vaccine for kilometres through deep snow and mud to gain access to the village and administer the vaccine. Since the start of the vaccine campaign in Turkey the two specialist mobile teams have vaccinated more than 130 citizens in rural villages, some as old as 106. Turkey's official drug and medical equipment body approved the Chinese Sinovac Coronavac vaccine for emergency use against the novel coronavirus on the 13th of January 2020. According to data from Turkey’s Health Ministry the country has vaccinated more than 3.6 million people. The death toll from the coronavirus in Turkey has reached more than 27,000 and the number of infections has topped 2.5 million since mid-March 2020. Globally more than 107 million people have been infected by the virus. (Photo by Chris McGrath/Getty Images)

The Yanshui Beehive Fireworks Festival is an annual tradition held on the 15th day after the beginning of the Lunar New Year in Tainan City for over 130 years. Located in Yanshui District, it is regarded as one of the most dangerous fireworks festivals in the world. Participants wear motorcycle helmets, fire-retardant clothing and thick gloves, with hundreds of thousands of firecrackers going off at the same time. According to Taiwan's Tourism Bureau, the 'beehive fireworks' festival started in 1885 as a request to the gods to spare the area from a cholera outbreak that was making its way through the villages. Future generations followed this tradition. It is believed that the 'baptism of fireworks' gets rid of calamities while bringing good fortune in the new lunar year. Bereaved families have today begun the creation of a vast Covid-19 Memorial Wall, on the Embankment opposite the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London. Painting individual red hearts for each of the lives lost to the virus, the group hopes to put personal stories at the heart of the Government's approach to learn lessons from the pandemic. Coronavirus is thought to be responsible for more than 145,000 deaths in the UK. 'This is an outpouring of love,' said Matt Fowler, co-founder of Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice, who lost his dad Ian, 56, to the virus. 'Each heart is individually hand-painted - utterly unique, just like the loved ones we have lost. And like the scale of our collective loss, this memorial is going to be enormous. We think it will take several days to complete and it's going to stretch for more than half a kilometre. We know not everyone can come down here to see it, but we really hope this can become a focal point for remembering this national tragedy. We have placed it at the heart of our capital so that the Government never loses sight of the personal stories at the heart of all this.'Bereaved family members and volunteers began work first thing this morning, using paint pens for the hearts and cleaning existing marks off the wall. The group has committed to restoring the site at the appropriate time. Those taking part are socially-distanced in no more than groups of six on given sections of walls. A Haitian girl waits for her mother to catch up after a guide had carried her up a mountain slope near Colombia's border with Panama on October 20, 2021 in the Darien Gap, Colombia. The 66-mile trek through dense rainforest and mountains is considered the most difficult stretch for migrants traveling from South America to the United States. Colombian guides accompany them on the two-day journey to the border with Panama, after which they are on their own for an additional several day trek when they are most vulnerable to bandits and other hazards on the trail. More than 70,000 migrants have traveled through the Darien Gap this year, according to Panamanian authorities. Most of the migrants in recent months have been Haitians, many of whom had been living in Chile and Brazil since the 2010 Haitian earthquake. The Darien Gap, which connects North and South America, is where the Panamerican Highway was never completed due to severe terrain, high cost and myriad environmental concerns.
