The Architecture of Apartheid - Hostels in South Africa
Inward-facing and access controlled, hostels resemble prisons from the air - a ubiquitous feature of the urban South African landscape and a reminder of the country’s history of restrictions on black freedom of movement. As South Africa enters its 27th year of democratic freedom, the question of what to do with these gigantic structures that thousands call home remains.
