We'd like our readers to start paying for Daily Maverick

More specifically, we'd like those who can afford to pay to start paying. What it comes down to is whether or not you value Daily Maverick. Think of us in terms of your daily cappuccino from your favourite coffee shop. It costs around R35. That’s R1,050 per month on frothy milk. Don’t get us wrong, we’re almost exclusively fuelled by coffee. BUT maybe R200 of that R1,050 could go to the journalism that’s fighting for the country?

We don’t dictate how much we’d like our readers to contribute. After all, how much you value our work is subjective (and frankly, every amount helps). At R200, you get it back in Uber Eats and ride vouchers every month, but that’s just a suggestion. A little less than a week’s worth of cappuccinos.

We can't survive on hope and our own determination. Our country is going to be considerably worse off if we don’t have a strong, sustainable news media. If you’re rejigging your budgets, and it comes to choosing between frothy milk and Daily Maverick, we hope you might reconsider that cappuccino.

We need your help. And we’re not ashamed to ask for it.

  • So….how many people who observed all those rules got Covid-19 anyway? Yes, lots of them. We do not know how President Trump got the disease. This is one of 45 people in history who became president of the United States of America. That is no small feat. By all means disagree with him and/or his policies, but demeaning him is really not the way to disagree. Dr Fauci of course is on record advising against wearing masks. Yes, he has changed his tune, he now claims he was trying to save PPE, so it was fine to lie at the time!

    • I really can’t believe someone can have an opinion like Ron Ron. Exactly the same as Trump. Don’t bother about masks, washing hands, social distancing. You might get the disease anyway. We’ll, if they we’re alive, I am sure those dead will disagree. Demeaning Trump is wrong. Really? I guess then you feel the same about Zuma, Hitler, Mogabe, and countless other so-called leaders. And we must simply just disagree?

      • I’m with Coen Gous on this. You have to be blind not to see through Trump after all of his obvious failings. From alienating allies to fawning over dictators; siding with Putin against his own intelligence services; screwing up everything from the Iran-Contra deal to his appalling response to the pandemic (200,000+ dead Americans and 11 million jobs lost) and his constant lying (28,000 false or misleading statements), it beggars belief that some people still revere him. That’s the power of the myth he created on The Apprentice. For Trump it’s all about the optics and not the substance, and that’s enough to bamboozle the weak minded.

        • I’m with Ron Ron on this one. I’m not sure who is blind here, watching and believing CNN does not really give a balanced view of USA politics or Trump.

        • There can only be two types of person who can support /defend Trump. One, those who have benefited directly from his patronage or benefited from his tax cuts and two, his gun hugging, bible thumping white supremecist thicky ‘base’. Why a non American should even think of defending this crooked snake oil salesman and obvious fraud defeats me. But draw your own conclusions.
