Covid-19: The Departed
Since its first detection in Wuhan City on December 31 last year, Covid-19 has killed more than 1 million people across the globe. In South Africa to date, 16 734 people have died from COVID-19-related illnesses. Here, we make a start at paying tribute to some of the people who have succumbed to the virus. We hope over time, with your help, we can grow this memorial to include many more whose lives have been cut short.
On 31 December 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported a cluster of pneumonia cases in Wuhan City, China. ‘Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2’ (SARS-CoV-2) was confirmed as the causative agent of what we now know as ‘Coronavirus Disease 2019’ (COVID-19). Since then, the virus has spread to more than 100 countries, including South Africa.
