Starbucks chief Howard Schultz retiring

Howard Schultz, who built a small Seattle coffee shop into the global powerhouse Starbucks, announced Monday that he was retiring from the company after nearly 40 years.

Schultz, who as chief executive and then chairman carved a reputation of being responsive to social and environmental issues as he installed nearly 28,000 Starbucks outlets worldwide, said he will remain with the company as chairman emeritus.

“We did it together, by balancing profitability and social conscience,” he said in a statement. DM
