First Thing – TGIF, 18 May 2018

Indonesian Muslims gather at Baiturrahman Grand Mosque, Banda Aceh, Indonesia, 17 May 2018. Muslims around the world celebrate the holy month of Ramadan by praying during the night time and abstaining from eating, drinking, and sexual acts during the period between sunrise and sunset. Giant ash plume erupts from Hawaii volcano

A massive ash cloud has shot miles into the air from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano. The explosion within the crater, the biggest this month so far, had created an aviation “red zone”, prohibiting all flights in the area. Scientists believe this may all be the precursor to a total eruption of the volcano which, while shaking the entire island, should not claim any lives due to its remote location.

White House confirms Gina Haspel as CIA head

Despite controversy over her record of torture of terror suspects, the US Senate has confirmed Gina Haspel as the CIA’s next director. Haspel, a career-long spook known for her work ethic rather than her politics, was picked by Donald Trump and supported by a handful of errant Democrats. Haspel will be the first woman to lead the agency, with her predecessor Mike Pompeo moving on to the position of Secretary of State.
