Analysis: Charges against Tom Moyane – serious, detailed, devastating

Suspended tax boss Tom Moyane will have a torrid time explaining away his “misconduct” at SARS to former Constitutional Court judge Kate O’Regan, who now chairs his disciplinary hearing. Served with four devastating charges last week, Moyane is gearing up for what he hopes will be an epic fight with President Cyril Ramaphosa. He seems to have no intention of fighting against the merits of the case against him just yet, but is about to challenge the process of his suspension and the way his disciplinary will be conducted.

New York Attorney General resigns amid assault claims
New York’s most senior state prosecutor and a self-proclaimed champion of the #MeToo movement, Eric Schneiderman has resigned after being accused of physically assaulting four women. Schneiderman strongly denied the claims made by the women to the New Yorker magazine, stating that the allegations were “unrelated” to his professional conduct. If true, however, these claims would absolutely be related to his entire conduct as a human being.
Nine soldiers killed in Somalia
Nine Kenyan soldiers on patrol in Somalia have been killed by a roadside bomb. The attack on Sunday was claimed by al-Shabaab. Security officials announced the attack late on Monday, stating that the improvised explosive device had destroyed the soldiers’ vehicle in the Jubaland region.
Trump warns against electing his doppleganger
President Donald Trump has taken a break from threatening nuclear brinkmanship with Iran to voice his concern over a West Virginia primary candidate. The candidate is a rogue senator who is running on the brand “Tr,umpier than Trump”. Don Blankenship, an ex-convict coal lord, has been running on a campaign of stereotypically far-right racism and conspiracy theories. Even Trump, it seems, has his limits in political company.
Avengers continues box office domination
Avengers: Infinity War has maintained its lead at the box office in its second weekend, raking in $114.8-million, joining fewer than 10 movies that did so. Overall, the latest Avengers movie has smashed through the $1-billion mark in 11 days, the fastest in history. All this and the movie has yet to be released in China.
