Catalan leaders arrests, Trump wants the death penalty for attacker, and dead turtles found in ocean.

Elections aftermath: Why did the ANC ignore its own research?

Supporters of ANC MP Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma’s presidential campaign have been fighting tooth and nail to keep control of the ANC’s largest province, KwaZulu-Natal. About a week ago they also bagged the prized – and somewhat coy – Mpumalanga, the second-largest province and the party’s kingmaker. Next they have set their sights on regaining the third in line, the ANC’s heartland of the Eastern Cape.

Spain arrests ex-ministers

Many of Catalonia’s deposed leaders were arrested by early Friday morning. The arrests were executed following a Spanish judge’s order that they be detained while an investigation is conducted into their role in the region’s independence move. Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont escaped the net, having remained in Belgium with four others. If Spain is looking for another equivalent of the Basque conflict, this is a great way to begin.

Trump to push for death penalty on NY attacker

President Donald Trump has called for the death penalty for Uzbek national Sayfullo Saipov. Saipov was arrested after killing eight people in Tuesday’s vehicle rampage. Trump wants federal law to kick in, calling for the death penalty. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, however, has stated that this “is an individual who should rot in prison for the rest of his life”.

Sentence push for Pistorius

Prosecutors will argue for a longer sentence to be given to Oscar Pistorius, as the current six years is “shockingly low”. The NPA, evidently more concerned with Pistorius than the Guptas, Zuma, or state capture in general, is to present its case to the SCA in Bloemfontein.

Hundreds of dead sea turtles found

Hundreds of dead sea turtles were discovered off the coast of El Salvador. Between 300 and 400 dead turtles were floating near Jiquilisco Bay. Local officials stated that they had no idea what caused their death. A similar occurrence in 2013 was attributed to toxic algae.
