Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba on Wednesday stoically delivered his maiden Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) that played kick-for-touch on the hard decisions. There was one exception: an announcement that government would sell “a portion” of its Telkom shares to offset the drain on the national purse by State-owned Entities (SOEs). The outspoken departure of Senators Jeff Flake and Bob Corker has resulted in President Donald Trump isolating them as rogue elements. Trump called his meeting with the party a “love fest” on Wednesday. With Trump being the last, best hope for the Republicans to pass substantial tax reform legislation, it might not be all hugs and kisses, but many inside the party will swallow their pride and back the Trump.
Rock architect Fats Domino dies
One of the forefathers of rock ‘n’ roll, Fats Domino, has died at age 89. The boogie-woogie pianist was one of the top-selling artists in the 1950s, getting credit for inspiration from Elvis Presley, Bob Marley and The Beatles. The legend passed away peacefully surrounded by family.
Night of the Living Dead creator honoured
George Romero, the director behind the cult classic “Night of the Living Dead” and the father of the zombie movie genre has been awarded a Hollywood star. Romero was posthumously given the Walk of Fame star and showered with praise by fellow Zombie movie actors and directors. Shot with just a $100,000 budget, the movie spawned a horde of zombie-related movies.
