We'd like our readers to start paying for Daily Maverick

More specifically, we'd like those who can afford to pay to start paying. What it comes down to is whether or not you value Daily Maverick. Think of us in terms of your daily cappuccino from your favourite coffee shop. It costs around R35. That’s R1,050 per month on frothy milk. Don’t get us wrong, we’re almost exclusively fuelled by coffee. BUT maybe R200 of that R1,050 could go to the journalism that’s fighting for the country?

We don’t dictate how much we’d like our readers to contribute. After all, how much you value our work is subjective (and frankly, every amount helps). At R200, you get it back in Uber Eats and ride vouchers every month, but that’s just a suggestion. A little less than a week’s worth of cappuccinos.

We can't survive on hope and our own determination. Our country is going to be considerably worse off if we don’t have a strong, sustainable news media. If you’re rejigging your budgets, and it comes to choosing between frothy milk and Daily Maverick, we hope you might reconsider that cappuccino.

We need your help. And we’re not ashamed to ask for it.

Trump faces first impeachment, major cancer treatment put before FDA, and eSports Overwatch league to be formed.

“Have no fear of perfection – you’ll never reach it.”
Salvador Dalí

The Cyril Ramaphosa who kowtows to Jacob Zuma is no more. The Deputy President who praises the President – calls him “Action-Man Zuma” – has gone. Instead, there is a man fighting, pushing and shoving his way to the Number One spot. Ramaphosa’s address to the SACP National Conference on Wednesday marks the start of a muscular campaign season. He’s using every trick in the book, every nudge and wink. And he appears to have a head of steam behind him.

First impeachment hits Trump

Democrat Brad Sherman (California) has filed a resolution aiming to impeach President Donald Trump. The reason?: “High crimes and misdemeanours.” The move will almost certainly be blocked by the Republican-controlled Congress but will be a valuable experience for Trump on the whole process, since more charges are almost certain to follow.

UN discovers new DRC mass graves

At least 38 probable mass graves have been discovered by the United Nations. Situated in and around Kasai, Democratic Republic of Congo, the graves raise the total tally to at least 80, and over 3,000 dead. Fighting between security forces and local militia since September is largely to blame.

Cutting-edge cancer therapy to be approved by FDA

An advisory panel has unanimously approved the US Food and Drug Administration’s consideration of an innovative new cancer therapy. Using genetic alteration of a patient’s own immune system, the new therapy could be a breakthrough treatment for leukaemia. The treatment, named CTL019 in 2014, has seen an astounding 89% success rate in eradicating leukaemia in trial patients.

US launches eSports Overwatch league

Activision Blizzard’s major hit shooter Overwatch will now enjoy the status of being a major eSports league. City-based franchises similar to the NFL will be formed in the United States, with each team costing roughly $20-million to form. If you think computer games were still for that spotty anorak in high school, think again.
