Having been told to step down as acting national police commissioner and return to his old job at the police forensics division, Lieutenant-General Khomotso Phahlane must now provide reasons why he should not be suspended. Police Minister Fikile Mbalula’s announcement on Thursday came after weeks of acrimonious tensions between Phahlane and police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), which is investigating Phahlane over alleged kickbacks and dodgy tenders. At the same time the appointment of the new “interim acting” top cop, Lieutenant-General Lesetja Mothiba, was announced.

[US pulls out of Paris climate accord](http://subscriptions.touchbasepro.com/t/d-l-ktfudk-l-o/)

President Donald Trump threatened to do it, and now the leader of the world's second largest source of greenhouse gases pulled out of the Paris climate accord. The withdrawal sets America at odds with the rest of the world in terms of environmental policy. Trump argued that he would try to negotiate a better deal, but if it was impossible, he glibbed, "that's fine".

Germany, France and Italy issued a joint statement in response to Trump's quitting of the accord. Noting the decision "with regret", other world leaders also joined the chorus. But it was France who won the cheekiest quote of the day, with newly-elected Emmanual Macron asking defenders of the climate to "make our planet great again".

Not one to be slowed by worldwide criticism, Donald Trump moved straight from turning his back on climate change towards reinstating a travel ban on Muslims. Announcing it in the middle of Ramadan, Trump is seeking to ban travel to the US from six countries. This time, however, he is seeking approval from the Supreme Court, which would probably trample over rulings made by lower courts so far against Trump.

[Epsom Derby to be UK's richest race](http://subscriptions.touchbasepro.com/t/d-l-ktfudk-l-p/)

The winner of the headline race at the Epsom Derby will pick up a cool £920,000. At $1.1-million, the Derby has become the United Kingdom's richest race, with the field wide open. According to those in the know, ie goggle-eyed equestrian types bedecked in tweed from the nave to the chops, at least six potential horses could win the massive takings.
