“Sorrow is better than fear. Fear is a journey, a terrible journey. But, sorrow is at least an arriving.”
Alan Paton
It was not the amount of gobbledygook that ANC Secretary-General Gwede Mantashe billowed out. Neither was it that the ANC national executive committee (NEC) once again chained its fortunes to that of President Jacob Zuma. It was not even that the NEC once again threatened ANC Members of Parliament with charges of misconduct should they vote against Zuma in a motion of no confidence that made the ANC’s Monday afternoon media briefing so bizarre. It was that the ANC NEC is seemingly oblivious that it has completely surrendered the party to the Gupta family. The ANC is now simply a campaign front for a criminal ring and has effectively handed over the responsibility of governance to private individuals.
Large-scale evacuations ahead of cyclone
Bangladesh has evacuated hundreds of thousands of civilians as Cyclone Mora made landfall overnight. About 300,000 people have been moved to hundreds of cyclone shelters as Mora was expected to generate a five-metre surge in some coastal areas.
US to investigate imports of PV cells
United States officials have notified the World Trade Organisation that they will be conducting an investigation into whether the import of photovoltaic or solar cells is harming American business. The government is acting on a request by Suniva, a local producer of the cells. If found true, imports could be heavily restricted, potentially raising PV cell prices in the US.
The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Nashville Predators in the first game of the Stanley Cup final playoffs. Following over a month of playoff action, it appeared as though both teams were desperate for a league victory. The playoffs introduced an innovative “coach’s challenge” option similar to cricket’s review system. If anyone at FIFA is awake, watching some ice hockey may yield some imaginative changes.
Tiger Woods has apologised to the greater public for his arrest for driving under the influence. Woods, however, insisted that he had not touched alcohol, but rather was heavily affected by prescription medication. Regardless, the DUI photo alone paints a grim fall from grace of one of the world’s best sports professionals of all time.
