For as long as the danger of a Cabinet reshuffle hangs over the country, particularly if it targets the finance ministry, President Jacob Zuma has enormous power. But as soon as Zuma announces the much-anticipated changes to the Cabinet, he loses his leverage – and possibly his usefulness to those in his political and business circle. Including the ANC’s spanking new MP, Brian Molefe, into Cabinet would be yielding to pressure from this faction but it could also precipitate a massive political, and perhaps economic, crisis – depending on his post. And what happens to Zuma then? Surely this is something he should consider before taking the plunge. 

 
 
 

Viola Davis, ‘Fences’ rake in the Oscars

At the time of writing, Denzel Washington’s “Fences” has secured high Oscars praise despite 14 nominations for “La La Land”. Viola Davis won the award for best supporting actress, playing the wife of a bitter garbage collector. Justin Timberlake got the show started, with host Jimmy Kimmel throwing in some choice barbs at actors and politicians alike.

 

Suicide attack foiled in Algeria

A policeman foiled an attempted suicide bombing in eastern Algeria on Sunday. After spotting the attacker, the policeman issued several warnings which were ignored, whereupon he opened fire, triggering the attacker’s explosive vest. The attack is one of 14 such fatalities in just a week.

 

Nokia relaunch 3310 model

Sunday saw Finnish mobile giant Nokia launch two new Android phones and resurrect the 3310 “brick” phone. Famous for being tougher than the centre of a neutron star, the 3310 was generally used for voice calls, cutting diamonds, and space exploration inside black holes. The new model, however, will allow for web browsing. And yes, there will be Snake.

 

Kane shaping up to be a Tottenham legend — Pochettino

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has gone on the record saying he believes Harry Kane looks set to become a club legend. Kane managed to secure another hat trick in the first half against Stoke City, while also achieving his 100th career club goal. Pochettino said to press: “Maybe he’s starting to be a legend with the goals he’s scoring and the way he behaves.”
