Elections aftermath: Why did the ANC ignore its own research?

There have been many heated national executive committee (NEC) meetings in the ANC’s nearly 105-year existence. It is rare, however, for NEC members to openly accuse each other of being “counter-revolutionaries” and “acting on behalf of your handlers”. The debate over the call for President Jacob Zuma to step down was so intense that two NEC members reportedly nearly came to blows. Compared to the surgical strike against Thabo Mbeki in 2008, Zuma appears to be invincible. In truth, the rebellion against Mbeki began years before his recall. President Barack Obama said on Tuesday that Michelle was "too sensible" for politics. With record-level approval ratings, however, Michelle Obama may well eschew sense for politics anyway in a few years time.

Smokers under 50 have greater chance of heart attack

The risk of heart attack for smoking is well established, but just how much higher the risk is for smokers under the age of 50 has only now been researched. In a study by scientists at the South Yorkshire Cardiothoracic Centre at Northern General Hospital in Sheffield revealed that the demographic was eight times more likely to suffer a heart attack than non-smokers of the same age.
