Elections aftermath: Why did the ANC ignore its own research?

President Jacob Zuma made a shocking revelation in Parliament on Wednesday that Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane’s faked recommendation for a commission of inquiry into the closure of the Gupta bank accounts was still under consideration. Despite the pressure coming at him, Zuma is still allowing the Guptas to control the presidency, with a farcical inquiry into South Africa’s banks now possible. While Zuma remains under the thumb of the Guptas, Cosatu has placed its bets on Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to succeed Zuma as ANC leader. They are effectively handing Ramaphosa a blank cheque – much like the one they gave Zuma previously.

Colombia signs peace deal with FARC

A hotly-contested peace deal between Colombia and FARC rebels was signed late on Thursday. The deal signed by President Juan Manuel Santos and guerrilla leader Rodrigo “Timochenko” Londono will be approved by Colombia’s congress and won’t be subject to a referendum. Embarrassment avoided at an unknown political cost, then.

Du Plessis to appeal his fine

Faf du Plessis has confirmed that he will be appealing his ball-tampering conviction. After having his match fee taken and demerit points added towards a possible suspension, du Plessis is understandably gatvol of the ICC and, quite likely, Australia. At the very least he appears to be taking his frustration out on the pitch in a productive manner.

Trump backs LA bid for Olympics

Donald Trump took some time out of picking his cabinet to endorse Los Angeles’ bid for the 2024 Olympics. Trump held a conversation with Mayor Eric Garcetti where he expressed his support. After all, why wouldn’t the IOC take America’s bid seriously after its president publicly denounced entire population, ethnic and gender groups who would compete in 2024.

Wobbly start for Russian World Cup prep

Corruption, lapsing deadlines, and quite literally a wobbly pitch seem to be plaguing Russian preparations for the 2018 World Cup. Stadiums in Nizhny Novgorod and Volgograd have been far behind construction schedule, looking to be completed only in early 2018. Combined with a pitch in Moscow that wobbles dangerously when retracted, and 2018’s World Cup needs a lot of touching up.
