Lesotho’s Democratic Congress faction ‘pulls out’ of coalition govt

Cape Town – A faction of the National Executive Committee of Lesotho's prime minister Pakalithi Mosisili's Democratic Congress party has reportedly announced that it is withdrawing from the country's coalition government.

According to SABC, the faction called on all its members who are ministers to resign “immediately”.

Deputy Leader Monyane Moleleki, said this during a media briefing.

The Democratic Congress has been riddled with factionalism for months, with Moleleki allegedly said to be forming a coalition with the opposition.

This time faction made its position clear, accusing the coalition government of failing to uphold the rule of law, the report said.

It also said that the coalition had failed to create jobs and grow the economy.

The faction supporting Mosisili was expected react to the new development in parliament on Friday when it convened.

Last week the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Facilitator in the Lesotho crisis, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa met with the country’s opposition leaders over the ongoing peace and stability efforts in the mountainous nation.

Among those who attended the meeting were former prime minister Tom Thabane, Theselle Maseribane leader of the Basotho National Party and Keketso Rantsho leader of the Reformed Congress of Lesotho.

Lesotho plunged into a political crisis after the 2014 failed coup attempt by an army general.
