UCT quiet as classes remain suspended

Cape Town - The University of Cape Town (UCT) was quiet on Monday as classes remained suspended, following three weeks of student protests on its campuses.

The Jammie bus shuttle service was also not operational.

UCT spokesperson Pat Lucas told News24 on Monday that university management was continuing discussions with students and other stakeholders.

Lucas said there were no reports of any activity or disruptions on campus, and all entrances to the university were open.

This was the third week of suspended academic activities. The university opened on Monday and Tuesday last week, but closed again on Wednesday following clashes between students and private security.

In a statement on Friday, Vice Chancellor Max Price said the university was still committed to finishing the academic year.

“The executive is continuing discussions on options and scenarios that might still enable students to conclude the 2016 academic year successfully,” he said.

“We will share these ideas as soon as possible with stakeholders and with students in particular.”

Fees Must Fall student leaders held a press briefing on Jammie Plaza on Friday, and said they would stop protesting once a TRC-style commission was established to address the plight of protesting students.

They also wanted management to commit to the idea of scrapping fees at the institution.
