The Gathering 2016: One exceptional moment in time 

President Jacob Zuma said he “did not take even a penny” of taxpayers’ money for the upgrades at his Nkandla home – a statement negated by the Public Protector’s report showing undue benefits and the Constitutional Court judgment confirming the president should reimburse the state. Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan told us at The Gathering 2016 that neither he nor anyone else being investigated by the Hawks regarding the SARS investigation unit “have ever stolen one cent of public money”. Almost the same configuration of words that caused widespread exasperation and showed contempt for accountability also led to a powerful and moving moment in South African politics. Orlando shooting brings out the good, bad, and ugly

Omar Mateen, an ISIL-claimed lone wolf, has killed at least 50 and injured another 53 at Orlando’s Pulse Club on Sunday. Mateen, an abusive, homophobic man, was killed in a shootout with authorities. Donald Trump, in true form, has already stated how this kind of thing won’t happen under his leadership. Read more

SABC gets the Anonymous treatment

Many of SABC’s websites went dark for several hours on Sunday, following a coordinated Anonymous hacking spree. The attacks were in retaliation for the SABC’s creeping censorship allegations. Anonymous ceased the attack at around 16h00. SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago has accused the hacktivist group of attack a National Key Point. He could well be right. Read more

Oscar in court today

Oscar Pistorius is to faced yet another court appearance. This time, Pistorius is facing a revised sentencing today. The original trial judge Thokozile Masipa will now review testimony in light of a revised judgement that ruled Pistorius was guilty of murder. Read more

Germany thumps Ukraine

Shkodran Mustafi’s and mobile museum piece Bastian Schweinsteiger have shot Germany through its first Euro 2016 performance, defeating Ukraine 2-0 on Sunday night. The scoreline betrayed a threatening Ukraine, making deep penetrations into Germany’s makeshift defence in the first half. Read more
