12 feared dead as Malawian city hit by floods
Lilongwe - Twelve people are believed to have died in the Malawian city of Mzuzu following heavy rains that have lashed the area since Thursday.
According to the Nyasa Times, rains recorded in the northern region of the country were the worst since the 2007-2008 season, with records indicating about 2 145mm of rain within four days.
While deaths were reported in Hill Top and Chibavi areas of the city, it was feared that hundreds of people could be left destitute as rain poured down in the Ching’ambo.
Activist Peter Mumba blamed the Department of Disaster at the Mzuzu City Council (MCC), along with the Malawi Red Cross, for not taking the issue “seriously”.
Meanwhile, President Peter Mutharika called on Malawian citizens to lend a helping hand to those being affected by the heavy rains.
According to a Malawi24 report, Mutharika took to his Facebook page to make a plea for assistance and prayer during the harsh conditions facing the southern African country.
