**North Korea may be preparing a long-range missile test.**[Fresh off the rumours of a possible nuclear detonation](https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2016-01-28-korea-may-be-readying-long-range-missile-launch-soon-kyodo) in Dear Leader's homeland, satellite imagery has indicated possible preparations for a new missile test. The Tongchang-ri missile test site has seen various screens erected, directly aimed at deterring satellite surveillance. Whether intended or not, the 'missile test' is certainly a worry for Asia in general.**Sudan has opened its borders with South Sudan for the first time since 2011.** While an [encouraging move](https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2016-01-28-sudan-opens-border-with-south-sudan-for-first-time-since-2011-secession) between the two countries, President Omar al-Bashir has also reportedly [deployed almost 4,000 troops](http://www.africandefence.net/conflict-looms-as-sudanese-troops-assemble/) along its border with rebel-controlled areas. The opening of its borders, combined with a transit fees agreement on Tuesday, all indicate a cooling of hostilities. Except, you know, for the thousands of soldiers still roaming along the two countries' borders.**Not content to remain silent before the Iowa Republican debate, Donald Trump has resorted to tweeting ad hominems.**[Casually tweeting](https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2016-01-28-trump-steps-up-attacks-with-bimbo-tweet-before-fox-news-debate) "I refuse to call Megyn Kelly a bimbo, because that would not be politically correct," Trump effectively did just that. Trump's absence from the final debate before Republicans begin choosing their candidates is seen as a risky gamble.**Hawaii's attorney general has ruled that fantasy sports constitute illegal gambling.**Although social leagues among friends or informal groups [remain legal under state laws](https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2016-01-28-hawaii-attorney-general-says-daily-fantasy-sports-contests-are-illegal), Hawaii has noted that daily fantasy 'games' for cash prizes are not. Regardless, rest assured that your own fantasy team probably still sucks, whether it's legal or not.

**Today is Data Privacy Day.**For some South African mobile carriers currently attempting to shut down any semblance of such privacy, there probably won't be any flags out today.**Fact of the day: Roughly 75 percent of the world's food is derived from 12 plant and five animal species.**

*Please note the Auschwitz-related fact was incorrect. The Red Army liberated the extermination camp in 1945.*
