Nicolson left his hometown of Melbourne to move to Johannesburg, beset by fears Australia was going to the dogs. With a camera and a Mac in his bag, he ventures out to cover power and politics, the lives of those included and those excluded. He can be found at the tavern, searching for a good story or drowning a bad one.

Parliament was officially opened for 2014 on Thursday evening. It was President Jacob Zuma’s last State of the Nation address of his first term and the final Kgalema Motlanthe will attend as Deputy President. GREG NICOLSON was there to see the glitz, gaffes, and gall.

A guest leaves Parliament after Zuma’s address.

ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe cheers as Zuma delivers his speech.

Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande laughs at Zuma’s announcement that more will be done to improve the study of sign language.

Minister of Public Enterprises Malusi Gigaba and Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa also laugh at the sign language reference, looking towards ANC officials in the gallery and making hand gestures in reference to Thamsanqa Jantjie.
