Chinese news agency launches English television channel

China Xinhua News Network Corporation has launched a global, 24-hour English news service. The move is widely seen as an attempt by the Chinese government to grow its international influence. The station's US service will be available on cable from October 1; it is not yet known if and when it will be available in South Africa. Read more: AP
