Barton apologises to BP, before apologising for his apology

US Republican representative Joe Barton seems to have caught foot-in-mouth disease from his friends over at BP. On Thursday he apologised to BP chief executive Tony Hayward over the way his company had been treated by the White House, saying BP had been the victim of a "shakedown". After both Democrats and Republicans expressed outrage, Barton retracted his apology a few hours later, as well as apologising for having apologised in the first place.
