US Marine walks free while war crimes case under review
Sergeant Lawrence Hutchins III, one of the few American soldiers to be handed serious jail time for war crimes in Iraq, was freed on Monday after an appeals court ruled his trial had been unfair. He has served four years of an eleven year sentence for allegedly killing an Iraqi civilian, then planting evidence to portray him as an insurgent. An appeals court found that he was prejudiced because his lead lawyer left shortly before his trial, which will now be reviewed in full. AP
