First of 30,000 new US troops on the ground in Afghanistan

A US defence department spokesman, Geoff Morrell, says the first of the 30,000 new troops being sent to Afghanistan following President Barack Obama’s decision to scale up US troop levels in that country have already started to arrive. Morrell told a press briefing on Wednesday that a Marine battalion ordered to deploy earlier this month already has "some boots on the ground", and the rest of that battalion will be flown in before Christmas. Officials say the goal is to have all 30,000 troops in place by the end of August. For more, read the AP
