West Africans fear chaotic Guinea will drag them down
The Economic Community of West African States says Guinea urgently needs a West African protection force. The African Union, US and EU have slapped sanctions on the country after troops killed some 200 people during mass protests over coup leader Moussa Dadis Camara’s intention to run for president in 2010 elections. Camara took power in December after long-time dictator Lansana Conte died. Less than two weeks ago, a junta member tried to assassinate Camara, and later escaped. Camara is said to be recovering in a Moroccan hospital, but Ecowas is now worried that the crisis in Guinea risks further destabilising Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau and Ivory Coast, all of which have been involved in protracted civil wars.
