Ugandans halt female circumcision

Uganda’s parliament has overwhelmingly passed a bill banning female genital mutilation of young girls, a practice also called female circumcision. Now, offenders face 10 years in prison, or a life sentence if a girl dies. Because it’s been a cultural belief practiced over generations, the bill has been subject to many difficulties. The practice also takes place in countries such as India and Indonesia. It’s a pity the Ugandan MPs haven’t at the same time shot down the barbaric call for stricter laws against homosexuality, which is illegal in Uganda. Proposed new laws provide for the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality”, which includes having gay sex with minors, the disabled, or when the accused is HIV-positive. Those convicted of having gay sex once can be sentenced to life in prison, while conviction for multiple acts means possible execution. Welcome to the 21st century, Uganda. Read more: CNN, CNN
