Chinese exceed US market for cars

Here’s a frightening thing. The Chinese will buy more cars than the Americans this year. The US has 300 million people, China four times that number. Until many more vehicles run on electricity, those luminaries gathered at Copenhagen are on a hiding to nothing. The Chinese demand for family runabouts is so high that people have to put their name on waiting lists. The same applies to other consumer goods, ranging from refrigerators to washing machines and PCs. Seeing as the Americans suck up 25% of the world’s energy output, this new trend means a terrific rise in greenhouse gases. None of these appliances are clean machines. But China says it has a right to economic growth. Who can argue with that. Read more: The New York Times
