Heathrow looks to new runway as congestion increases

First they built Terminal 5, now Britain’s Heathrow Airport plans to build a third runway after chronic congestion saw it win conditional endorsement from the government’s chief climate adviser. There’s been lots of talk around Copenhagen about how stacking jets in the sky for landing is a seriously polluting activity. But along with improvements in aircraft fuel efficiency and better air traffic control, the Brits are seeking a 54% increase in the number of flights at all UK airports in years to come, without breaching the government’s goal of reducing aviation emissions. Britain says the aviation sector’s carbon dioxide emissions by 2050 must not exceed 2005 levels. It’s a target. Now someone needs to aim for it. Read more: The New York Times
