UN, aid agencies says Zimbabwe humanitarian situation better
The UN and some 70 aid agencies have launched an appeal for $378 million to meet Zimbabwe's humanitarian needs, after they noted an improvement in Zimbabwe's social conditions under the unity government. But they say that, despite improvements in food security, an estimated 1.9 million people will need food aid between January and March. This is a dramatic improvement on about 7 million who needed food aid in 2008. Last year the country suffered a cholera outbreak from collapsing health, water and sanitation systems, which infected some 100,000 people and killed about 4,000. Zimbabwe has managed to bring down astronomical inflation to within reasonable levels after Robert Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party and Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change formed a power-sharing government, with MDC ministers running crucial portfolios.
