Latest compromise on health reform surfaces in US Senate discussions

Under the latest compromise in the US health care reform debate, the plan surfacing in the Senate would provide for private insurers to offer the “public plan” option. Rather than a variation on the so-called Medicare-for-the-masses idea, this new notion would see private plans with a government agency’s stamp of approval – similar in many ways to the plans available to federal employees. The health care reform plan is now under consideration on the floor of the Senate and majority leader, Harry Reid, has called for negotiations to be completed almost immediately. Democratic senator Paul Harkin argued, “It's one of those kind of things in the middle that doesn't make everybody very happy, but that's our compromise.” For more, read the AP
